OBSERVATIONS ON THE RELATION OF THE VIRUS CAUSING RABBIT PAPILLOMAS TO THE CANCERS DERIVING THEREFROM II. THE EvmENcE PROVIDED BY T~E TU~0gS: GE~'-E~X, CONSIDERATIONS

چکیده
In an accompanying paper the relationship of the Shope virus engendering papillomas to the cancers deriving from these growths has been approached from the side of the virus. I t will now be considered in the light of certain data provided by the tumors themselves. The papilloma is known to be characterized by those traits of appearance and behavior which distinguish neoplasms from other pathological processes (1). Much new evidence on this point has lately come to hand.

Observations on the Relation of the Virus Caus- Ing Rabbit Papillomas to the Cancers Deriving Therefrom I. the Influence of Tiie Host Sp~.czes and of Tiie Pathogenic Activity and Concentration of the Virus
The carcinomas deriving from the papillomas induced with a virus in domestic rabbits (1) have this virus as their primary cause. The present paper is concerned with the carcinogenic effect of various strains of the virus,--meaning thereby the infective materials procured from the "spontaneous" papillomas of different cottontail rabbits,--and with the influence of the concentration of the inocul...

The papillomas caused by the Shope virus sometimes grow down spontaneously into the subcutaneous tissue and extend along the lymphatics in the same way as do many cancers of the human breast. They may even invade the voluntary muscle under such circumstances, taking on an aspect suggestive of squamous cell carcinomatosis, but ultimately they differentiate in the way characteristic of the papill...

متن کاملExperiments on the Cause of the Rabbit Carcinomas Derived from Virus-induced Papillomas
Three out of four carcinomas arising from rims-induced, rabbit papillomas have grown well after transplantation to sucklings. Two were propagated serially, and it seems likely that all could have been maintained indefinitely had litters been available of newborn animals of the sort in which they arose. These successes are the more worthy of note because of the well-nigh uniform failure of simil...
متن کاملCancers Deriving from the Virus Papillomas of Wild Rabbits under Natural Conditions
The naturally occurring virus papillomas of western cottontail rabbits become malignant occasionally. The cancers derive from the papilloma cells, that is to say from elements already rendered neoplastic by the virus and still infected therewith. Papillomas produced with the virus in jack rabbits and snowshoe rabbits become cancerous in the same way but much more frequently, as is the case in d...
